In collaboration with Fashion Scoop Daily and event organizers, elements of the stage design and some of the seating placed in the event space and an adjacent event tent were provided courtesy of Designer Timothy Oulton. Jonathan's Place Presents "A Chance to Soar" at Brook Hollow Golf Club - DeMarcus Ware Honored

Enthusiasm for the cause was flying high at Brook Hollow Golf Club when Jonathan's Place welcomed actress, author and adoption advocate Nia Vardalos and former Dallas Cowboy DeMarcus Ware to "A Chance To Soar". A capacity crowd filled Brook Hollow's formal dining room on April 19th as patron's turned out to show their support for this wonderful organization that provides a safe, loving home and specialized services to children who have been abused, abandoned or neglected.

Dallas Light and Sound is proud to have been selected by Jonathan's Place to provide audio, video projection, stage design and lighting for "A Chance to Soar."

It's a capacity crowd at Brook Hollow Golf Club for "A Chance to Soar", presented by Jonathan's Place.
Former Dallas Cowboy  DeMarcus Ware and his former wife adopted their daughter Marley
after three failed pregnancies.  DeMarcus has been involved with Jonathan’s Place since 2006.
Jonathan's Place chose Ware as their 2014 honoree at "A Chance to Soar" for his continued support of the organization.

Keynote speaker, actress and adoption advocate Nia Vardalos Nia connected with everyone in the room
thanks to humorous tales and heart-wrenching memories of adopting her daughter Ilaria in 2008.
Interested parties can read more about Nia's journey as an adoptive parent in her book "Instant Mom".

Ware had this to say about Jonathan's Place.  “I’m a big advocate of giving people a second chance because of my little daughter. I adopted her from birth and she’s been a big blessing to me from a lot of the devastating things that have happened to me with pregnancies that happened to my ex-wife. It’s all about giving people second chances and giving them opportunities they never had."

“At Jonathan’s Place, they shelter, they mentor and they get kids from newborn all the way to 17 years old back to the stage where they can go back into society and feel comfortable, so that’s the reason why I’m a big advocate of what they’re doing and I’ve seen how they’ve progressed through the years and it’s been great.”

Congratulations to Jonathan's Place on producing such a successful event. To see additonal images from "A Chance to Soar" visit the Dallas Light and Sound Facebook Photos pages at...

Dallas Urban Debate Alliance 5th Annual Awards Gala held at Jim Lee's Starlight Room

Dallas Urban Debate Alliance celebrated their students, coaches and volunteers during the organization's Fifth Annual Awards Gala on Friday, May 9th at Jim Lee's Starlight Room in Downtown Dallas. The organization turned to Dallas Light and Sound for production expertise for the event. Thank you for this opportunity to work for an organization that supports such a great group of kids.

The support of patrons at the gala not only allowed the organization to showcase the achievements of students, but also helped raise the necessary resources to expand the program to the many Dallas ISD students and schools currently on the group's waitlist. Harriet Miers, Dallas Urban Debate volunteer and notable attorney, served as keynote speaker at the event.

Dallas Urban Debate Alliance has a proven track record of delivering outstanding academic opportunities to public school students in Dallas. Here’s Dallas Urban Debate by the numbers:
Urban Alliance Debaters
show their medals following
a debate tournament in March
  • Debate is making a difference for kids in our community: About 1,000 DISD students were touched by debate programming this school year (2013-14).
  • At Dallas ISD’s request, the Dallas Urban Debate continues to grow and now has 24 high schools and 15 middle schools in the program, a 30% increase over last year. Dallas Urban Debate was named the 2012 Outstanding League of the year out of 20 other cities!
  • Through February alone, Dallas Urban Debate has facilitated over 3,000 debate rounds this school year. Each of these one to two-hour debate rounds is a high level discussion of the effects of US economic policies in Latin America.
  • Over 80% of Dallas urban debaters are students of color and over 70% are economically disadvantaged. The large majority of urban debaters have parents who did not attend college and peers who will not graduate from high school.
  • Multiple peer-reviewed studies have shown that debate increases student academic performance. How? Participation in an urban debate program increases literacy scores, increases grade-point averages and increases high school graduation rates. Debaters are also three times less likely to engage in high-risk behavior as compared to their peers.

Artist vs Architect - Transforming a Vacant Floor into an Event Space

Inspired by the ingenuity of today’s artistic and design professionals, Artist vs. Architect wowed Dallas at its first-annual one-of-a-kind art competition and silent auction benefiting Dwell with Dignity. Held on Saturday, November 3, 2012 from 7 - 11 pm on the 19th Floor of the historic Saint Paul Place, Artist vs. Architect served as a platform to celebrate the creativity of the modern world of design and architecture. Prior to the event, the 19th floor at Saint Paul Place consisted of a vacant shell with outer walls, bathrooms and central elevator core - essentially a blank palette against which to stage the event. Following the event, the 19th floor remains a vacant space, available for lease.

Focusing on a central theme in support of the heartbeat of the chosen beneficiary, Dwell with Dignity, each contestant chosen for Artist vs. Architect showcased works reflecting their mission to "Escape Poverty."

The CreateGate wall at Architect vs Artist encouraged
free form expression and was created live
during the event.
From 7 - 11 p.m., 24 carefully chosen contestants highlighting 12 of Dallas’ top architecture firms and artistic talent showcased their work for a chance to win the title of "Dallas’ Best Artist" and "Dallas’ Best Architect". Proceeds from the silent auction benefited Dwell with Dignity and will go towards supporting local artistic and design professionals. The competing piece submitted by each contestant was reviewed by a selected panel of judges and attendees, including Bijan Youssefzadef, Program Director; the University of Texas at Arlington; Diane Cheatham of Urban Edge Developers, Ltd.; Janice Myers of Samuel Lynne Galleries; Jim Wilson of Goddard Investment Group; Nicole Horn of ArtCon; William Noble of William Noble Rare Jewels.

Current architectural design contestants for Artist vs. Architect included these firms: ARCHITEXAS, Good Fulton & Farrell, GSR Andrade Architects, HKS, Corgan's Interiors Studio, M2 Studio, O'Brien Architects and Page Southerland Page.

Omniplan Architest took the honors as "Best Dallas Architect" with artist Michael Maudlin scoring the top honorsas "Best Dalas Artist."

Involved with event organizers from the early stages of the event space conceptualization, DLS consulted on the floorplan for the event and helped guide and direct the overall event design, including placements of VIP areas, welcome desk and beverage service stations.

Before and After - AIN Bloomin Ball at the Hilton Anatole Grand Ballroom

The Grand Ballroom at the Hilton Anatole prior to
set up for the AIN Bloomin Ball 2012.
Event production is about more than just delivering and setting up equipment... it involves working closely with the client to develop a floorplan, create a design, and execute a vision for the event.

Setup is underway, with staging conforming to the floorplan,
and lighting and audio installations underway for
the 2012 AIN Bloomin Ball at the Hilton Anatole Grand Ballroom.
The 2012 "Bloomin Ball - Sowing the Seeds of Hope" marks the fourth year that Dallas Light and Sound has provided production services for this seated dinner gala for 500. Now in its second year at the Hilton Anatole Grand Ballroom, it was important this year to leverage prior experience of producing the event in the Grand Ballroom, while striving to provide a fresh visual experience for patrons. Everyone involved in the event worked diligently to elevate the experience for 2012, which included an interpretative dance performance for the first time.

The Performance Stage is ready to welcome the band and
eight vocalists to perform at Bloomin Ball 2012
at the Hilton Anatole Grand Ballroom.
Pulling the event's signature colors into the room served as a foundation for the event design. DLS was tasked with designing and delivering the key aspects of production  - stage design, lighting, audio, and video projection.

A dual-stage approach and two video screens provided the foundation of "the look" of the event with vocal performances occurring on one stage and speeches and the Crystal Hope awards delivered from an adjacent stage. The performance stage and presenter stage were lit both with lekos and a pair of spotlights in an intelligent lighting design controlled from the technical deck. These elements meant the audience always knew where to focus their attention and kept the event from becoming visually stagnant.

The spotlights are on Honorary Event Co-Chair Andy Smith
as he addresses the crowd from amongst an
elaborate floral installation at Bloomin Ball 2012 at the Hilton Anatole Grand Ballroom.
The event chairs relied upon Dallas Light and Sound to provide a simple stage backdrop design in order to showcase a first-ever fresh florals stage set. The Chairs and event underwriter C's Florist worked for nearly two days to create a "floral experience" on the presenting stage. Once installed, Dallas Light and Sound lighting designer Craig Canant created a lighting design that added depth and texture to the floral elements on the stage.

Eight local vocalists under the direction of
Ray Norris delivered powerful performances at
AIN Bloomin Ball - Sowing the Seeds of Hope..

The AIDS Interfaith Network is the beneficiary of Bloomin Ball. AIN is a multicultural, faith-based, nonprofit HIV/AIDS service organization that provides direct care services to meet practical, emotional, and spiritual needs of persons with HIV/AIDS and prevention programs for individuals, groups, and communities.

AIN has been providing a combination of prevention and care programs for 25 years. More Than 1500 Attend No Tie Dinner at Frontiers of Flight Museum

A huge crowd of patrons turn out for No Tie Dinner 2012.
More than 1500 ASD patrons turned out on March 24th for No Tie Dinner, an evening of food, drink and entertainment benefiting AIDS Services of Dallas. The dessert portion of the evening was held at the Frontiers of Flight Museum. The evening saw both silent and live auctions bring in tens of thousands for the agency. With a revised format under the guidance of event chair David Nelson, the addition of live entertainment, video messages from ASD supporters, and a new layout for the floor, the evening was in many ways like none that had come before.

A custom designed DJ booth and video projection installation
from Dallas Light and Sound at No Tie Dinner 2012
No Tie Dinner is a complicated event to produce, with attendees starting the evening at dozens of private homes and restaurants before converging on Frontiers of Flight for a dessert party and the end of the night festivities. Adding video and a performance this year, Nelson relied on Dallas Light and Sound to deliver the look for the evening. Another first for the event saw DLS provide professional silent auction lighting, which helped patrons see what they were bidding upon, read bid sheets, and place bids!

A sophisticated, custom designed DJ booth, concert quality audio including audio on the upstairs mezzanine, stretch spandex video screens, and black and white linens rounded out the look. Branding for the event included projection of the No Tie Logo in gobo format on the elevator shaft leading to the upstairs mezzanine. Uplighting in the upstairs art and auction lounge extended the event's signature color of teal throughout the facility.

Silent auction lighting is so important in helping deliver big returns from what is
often the largest source of non-sponsor revenue for many events.

Texas PTA 2011 Statewide Student Awards Ceremony

Students, parents and educators from across Texas came to the Grand Hall at the Texas Discovery Gardens earlier this year to receive statewide honors in a variety of competitive categories. The governing organization for PTA chapters across Texas selected Dallas Light and Sound to provide audio and projection services for their event "Reflections". With four separate sessions of awards, hundreds attended and all could hear the crystal clear audio provided by Dallas Light and Sound. Notice – not a speaker in sight!

Other event production companies might have used speakers on poles to supply audio for this event….. marring sight lines and ruining pictures for awards recipients. NOT Dallas Light and Sound…. Our no-poles approach to audio does the trick every time!
Video projection took place on a motorized screen that is permanently installed in the Grand Hall, as seen in these pictures.

Red Carpet Entrance for Darling Homes at Angelika Plano

Guests at a special recognition celebration at the Angelika Plano took a trip to "Hollywood" and were greeted by a Dallas Light and Sound red carpet entrance earlier this month. Red carpet and velvet roped stanchions created the exclusive look sought by Darling Homes and Bar 10 Events, who managed the function for Darling Homes.

Held at the Angelika Plano, this private, afternoon event turned up the glam with a Hollywood style movie premiere entrance. In addition to providing the memorably entry, Dallas Light and Sound supplied black velour pipe and draping to mask off unused areas of the sleek, art house movie theatre.

Red carpet and pink carpet entrances and carpeted seating and lounge area are a specialty of Dallas Light and Sound, and are available for stand alone installations or as part of a larger event decor package. Eight Steps to Great Event Lighting

Lighting is the strongest medium available to transform a meeting or gala into an exciting, elegant event that guests will both enjoy and remember. At Dallas Light and Sound – “Your Vision is our Mission”. Our staff of event designers are skilled at transforming dreams into reality..... and lighting plays the most important part of that process.

To accomplish this objective, we rely upon information gleaned from discussions with our clients of the “Eight Steps to Great Event Lighting”. Often all of the answers aren't known during the first meeting. If you are just getting started then don't worry, we routinely work with clients to fill in those blanks.

Step 1 - Basic questions
A few basic questions start the process of designing the lighting for any event.

gusts to an event.
  • Which facility — convention center, hotel ballroom, church, temple, tent?
  • What is the event - awards gala, wedding, style show, performance
  • How many guests are attending?
  • Will there be centerpieces, and how tall will they be?
  • What are the room dimensions, and are there chandeliers or soffits that alter the ceiling height?
  • Is there a theme, and what colors relate to it?
  • Is dancing planned for the evening? Does the facility have a dancefloor?
  • Is there entertainment or a speaker, and what are their lighting requirements?
  • What is the size of the stage? Does the facility furnish staging.
  • Will guest speakers speak on stage or on the dance floor, or do they wander?
  • Is fog or haze allowed? Is it required to have a fire marshal present to shut the sprinklers off?
Other questions that can impact the cost of providing services include:When is load-in and strike, and how long do we have? What is the size of the elevator, are there any weight limitations, and does the elevator operate 24/7? Are other groups loading in at the same time? Can we leave the truck on the dock, or where can we park it? Does the facility have a lift and can we use the lift? Is there a room where we can store our road cases and packing crates?

Step 2 - Make a layout
The room layout partially dictates the lighting. It is important to include all the tables, stage, dance floor, video projection area, bars and buffet tables.

Step 3 - Light buffets, centerpieces, floral arrangements, bars, silent auctions
A variety of different par cans and pin spots are used to light centerpieces, floral arrangements, buffets and bars. An event that features a silent auction will see greater revenue realized if auction items are lit properly.
.
Step 4 - Light the Walls and CeilingNothing is worse than walking into an event where the “house lighting” is the only lighting in use and where it is on at 100% brightness. The room should neither be too dark or too bright. Dallas Light and Sound owns a variety of fixtures to wash rooms including the latest in LED technology. A room or tent can be completely transformed using a wash of one color on the walls with the same or another color on the ceilings. Dallas Light and Sound frequently utilizes color changing LED fixtures, and both water texture and kaleidoscope texture fixtures to achieve dramatic effects in washing the walls and ceiling. Custom gobos for your event add a refined touch and are available with adequate lead time. Dallas Light & Sound maintains ample gobo projectors to project logos or messages onto every wall of the room, the ceiling, floor and entrance.
Step 5 - Light the Stage
If a stage and performance is part of the event (and it usually is) lighting the stage is the most important part of the event because the stage becomes the visual focal point of the entire event. This is literally where “the magic happens.” In addition to great lighting, trussing, spandex shapes, theatrical curtains and other stage elements combine to make for a really impressive event. For the greatest impact, follow spots are always a great choice.
.
Step 6 - Light the Dance Floor
Dancing in the dark isn’t any fun. If dancing is part of the event, the floor should be lit with intelligent lighting fixtures to punch up the fun and make the event guests feel as if they are part of the event. Dallas Light & Sound owns a staggering array of intelligent light fixtures to light a dancefloor for 200 or 2000. When the dance floor is unoccupied, the group producing the event may want to have their logo or a message projected onto the floor. Gobo projectors are the way to make that happen and Dallas Light and Sound has projectors at the ready.

Step 7 - Video Projection is Important
High definition video projectors and both front and rear projection screens are big parts of our impressive inventory of lighting fixtures. Need to project a sponsor loop or information about an event, the agenda, or technical info? Want to incorporate video into your event? Dallas Light and Sound is ready to make it happen.
.
Step 8 - Exterior Lighting Welcomes GuestsExterior lighting is a growing field. To make a great impression on arriving and departing guests, nothing has a more dramatic effect than lighting the outside of a tent or a museum or the grounds of a house. Projecting an event logo onto the sidewalk, walls of a building, or in the entranceway is an impressive way to welcome
.
Budget - Balancing the desired look of the event against the available budget is where our expertise comes into play to help realize the dreams of our clients. Events large and small benefit from an in-person discussion with one of our event designers. Call Dallas Light and Sound at 214-943-4238 to schedule an appointment for a consultation.
