Artist vs Architect - Transforming a Vacant Floor into an Event Space

Inspired by the ingenuity of today’s artistic and design professionals, Artist vs. Architect wowed Dallas at its first-annual one-of-a-kind art competition and silent auction benefiting Dwell with Dignity. Held on Saturday, November 3, 2012 from 7 - 11 pm on the 19th Floor of the historic Saint Paul Place, Artist vs. Architect served as a platform to celebrate the creativity of the modern world of design and architecture. Prior to the event, the 19th floor at Saint Paul Place consisted of a vacant shell with outer walls, bathrooms and central elevator core - essentially a blank palette against which to stage the event. Following the event, the 19th floor remains a vacant space, available for lease.

Focusing on a central theme in support of the heartbeat of the chosen beneficiary, Dwell with Dignity, each contestant chosen for Artist vs. Architect showcased works reflecting their mission to "Escape Poverty."

The CreateGate wall at Architect vs Artist encouraged
free form expression and was created live
during the event.
From 7 - 11 p.m., 24 carefully chosen contestants highlighting 12 of Dallas’ top architecture firms and artistic talent showcased their work for a chance to win the title of "Dallas’ Best Artist" and "Dallas’ Best Architect". Proceeds from the silent auction benefited Dwell with Dignity and will go towards supporting local artistic and design professionals. The competing piece submitted by each contestant was reviewed by a selected panel of judges and attendees, including Bijan Youssefzadef, Program Director; the University of Texas at Arlington; Diane Cheatham of Urban Edge Developers, Ltd.; Janice Myers of Samuel Lynne Galleries; Jim Wilson of Goddard Investment Group; Nicole Horn of ArtCon; William Noble of William Noble Rare Jewels.

Current architectural design contestants for Artist vs. Architect included these firms: ARCHITEXAS, Good Fulton & Farrell, GSR Andrade Architects, HKS, Corgan's Interiors Studio, M2 Studio, O'Brien Architects and Page Southerland Page.

Comments from our Clients...

Pinspot cake lighting from Dallas Light and Sound
"Craig was amazing at our wedding yesterday!
He had to implement a last minute rain plan,
...everything turned out beautifully."

From the beautiful Angela Adams Fleider who wed her sweetheart Rich Fleider on a very rainy day at Texas Discovery Gardens on Sunday, September 16th.

Craig Canant, DLS Event Designer and Dallas Light and Sound's manager for events at Texas Discovery Gardens made it work on a day that could have turned into a disaster. Craig and out team worked with Bridal Associates, TDG staff and the Bride and Groom to move the wedding ceremony from outside on the Grand Allee at TDG into the Grand Hall. Cocktails moved into the Butterfly House while the Grand Hall went through a quick "transformation" from ceremony site to a seated reception. A beautiful evening was the result. Congratulations to Angela and Rich, may you enjoy a lifetime of happiness - and thank you for your kind comments.

In a seperate note sent to Dallas Light and Sound event manager Craig Canant, we were delighted to find these lovely comments...

Thanks for your personal attention and touch at Sarah and Bartow's wedding at Texas Discovery Gardens on August 18th.

Despite the torrential downpour, the wedding was a smashing success by all accounts. The lighting and its level worked out really well.

The food was great, the flowers beautiful, and the band rocked

(and managed to find enough power with your help).

Best regards,
Joe and Cathy McCall

It was an honor to play an instrumental role in providing a wonderful experience for their daughter and her groom. To see images of weddings and receptions at Texas Discovery Gardens,  visit our facebook page a www.facebook.com/dallaslightandsound

Ruby Bhandari
An Annual Fashion Extravaganza, the 2012 Silk Threads fundraiser presented a beautiful fusion of fashion and art at the Trammell Crow Museum of Asian Art. Sponsors, volunteers and producers gave their all on October 5th in support of this year’s theme being Le Reve Couture - "Making a Child’s Hopes and Dreams Come True." Ruby Bhandari, CEO and Chief Designer of Silk Threads, delivered a very special evening filled with many magical and exciting moments.

The Children’s Advocacy Center of Collin County (a 501(c)3 nonprofit agency) takes action to provide safety, healing and justice to the children victimized by neglect and abuse.

The styleshow portion of the event took place in the water gardens space between the Trammell Crowe Asian Arts Museum and the Trammell Crow Center in Downtown Dallas. Attendees enjoyed more than 100 fashion looks, in a fashion and entertainment extravaganza choreographed and produced by Rhonda Sargent Chambers and her team from RSC Show Productions. The designs of Ruby Bhandari were visually stunning presented in a show consisting of four segments: modern, casual, contemporary, and bridal. The stylish soiree, hosted by WFAA Channel 8's Amy Vanderoef of Good Morning Texas fame, utilized the Trammell Crowe Center water gardens as a stunning backdrop, with lighting for the show and the gardens area provided by Dallas Light and Sound.

The evening spotlighted the best in Indian culture, one of the oldest cultures, with a rich history in arts. The traditions and designs from centuries ago are passed within families of artisans, with every generation adding their modern interpretation. Silk Threads is committed to preserving these traditions, but using them in conjunction with the fashion needs of the occasion and context, creating pieces of wearable art.

Entertainment was essential to the evening, with a series of 8 moving fixtures

Attendees at The Great Gatsby "The Cat's Meow" enjoyed an afternoon of libations served by Bar 10 events, delicious bites from Doug Boster Catering and Wendy Krispin, and electric entertainment from headliner Hunter Sullivan and emcee Neale Jones. Dallas Light and Sound chose one of our Electrovoice "Raven" microphones to capture Sullivan's voice. The Raven microphone combines gorgeous, streamlined, modern design with the latest sound engineering and technology to offer sonic detail and clarity unparalleled in the industry. This stylish microphone excels at capturing vocals and instruments in studio and on stage. Dallas LIght and Sound has three raven mics in our inventory and used two of them at the event, one for vocalist Hunter Sullivan and one to provide amplification for the Grand Piano seen in the background. We channelled both voice and piano out onto the veranda and through the garden grounds at the home of hostess Faye Briggs.

ArtLoveMagic was founded in January of 2007 by Michael Lagocki, Justin Nygren, and David Rodriguez. Our inspiration was the belief that a staggering amount of artistic talent in our area (Dallas/Fort Worth) was going unrecognized and/or underdeveloped. They knew from personal experiences that artists, writers, and musicians thrive when they work together in creative environments. Today ArtLoveMagic is nearing their 100th unique event and have worked with countless artists and performers in the DFW area. The organization participates in most of the major local festivals and has worked with dozens of local business, schools, and organizations to bring live art and music to the city.
